Polish Crested Loner...Is she depressed?

That is the cutest, funniest, most touching story. Thanks for sharing. I am glad she's so much better. If you get a chance, post some pics of the pony tail. I'd love to see that!

O wow, i had a lonely polish like that. When I cut the feathers over her eyes she was transformed! Stands up tall and follows the group now.
great idea - pony tail. I wonder also about painters tape? like masking tape.

I think we all want to see a picture of your Polish in her new "do". I have one but she doesn't seem to be as poofy or have vision problems. She is very independent and has her own very distinct personality, though, and whenever the rooster comes near her, she just gives him "stink eye" and he goes he other way! Been that way since day 1, named her Tyranosaurus Chicken, aka "Tyra"...but wow does she lay a huge egg for a Bantam. Will keep the ponytail holder in mind if her hairdo ever gets out of control - I know she hates to get it wet!

LOL I have a white polish pullet like that. She is a real meanie, an only child. She was the only one that hatched under my broody orp this spring and I named her "Trouble" because of her mom. If anyone got near her, they were in trouble. But now, she herself is real "Trouble!"

And I have a white crested black that is only 5 weeks old so I'm keeping the pony tail in mind when they both get old enough to have a full crest.

I have a Houdan hen with the same problem.

Plus in the Winter her crest dipped into the heated waterbowl and then froze so she had "Poofsicles" dangling.
As if this wasn't bad enough, the other hens were so bored (primadonnas refused to go out in the snow, so they kept themselves in lockdown in the coop) they pecked her entire topknot out!
She looked like Curly Joe Stooge.
Blu-Kote did nothing to discourage the pecking, she just had to sit it out until warmer weather & they could get out & pick at something besides her head

Now I just keep her topknot clipped - a Chicken Crewcut - so she can see.
I just flip her over on her back in my lap and use a scissors to clip the feathers on her crest to about 2-3" on either side - so I can see her eyes.
She still has a pouf, but it doesn't flop over her eyes.
She was having the same problems - running into things & getting "lost"

IIWY, I'd worry about your hen getting the ponytail holder off & then eating it.

Thank you all for your kindness and encouragement! I've been trying to get a good picture of her, but she's so frisky now that she won't hold still long enough! All the shots come out blurry. If I manage to get a decent one, I'll be sure to post it.
