I have a Houdan hen with the same problem.
Plus in the Winter her crest dipped into the heated waterbowl and then froze so she had "Poofsicles" dangling.
As if this wasn't bad enough, the other hens were so bored (primadonnas refused to go out in the snow, so they kept themselves in lockdown in the coop) they pecked her entire topknot out!
She looked like Curly Joe Stooge.
Blu-Kote did nothing to discourage the pecking, she just had to sit it out until warmer weather & they could get out & pick at something besides her head
Now I just keep her topknot clipped - a Chicken Crewcut - so she can see.
I just flip her over on her back in my lap and use a scissors to clip the feathers on her crest to about 2-3" on either side - so I can see her eyes.
She still has a pouf, but it doesn't flop over her eyes.
She was having the same problems - running into things & getting "lost"
IIWY, I'd worry about your hen getting the ponytail holder off & then eating it.
