Usually they eat the shell.

i have a bantam cockerel a week younger than your pullet and he was showing him comb and wattles at 4-5 months old. was crowing by that time too. was a late crower in my house.

could it be because of lack of enough light in the coop? i've moved mine into my garage coop so i could keep light on them longer in the evening and i've noticed a difference in my girls. one started laying this week-houdan/polish cross about 6mo, and the others are starting to show a lot more interest in the boxes since i keep ceramic eggs in them.

I don't know. I have 28 pullets and all are laying exept this one and 3 EE's who are a few weeks younger. They are still going gangbusters even with the decrease in daylight. I've never seen any evidence of yolk . Do Polish usually start late? Aren't their eggs white?

Yes, their eggs are white and usually pointy on the small end.
