We ordered a small group of various breeds of pullets from Meyer's in late April and hoped the 92 or so % chance would fall in our favor. But now I'm having a different opinion on my Silver Laced Polish. Can anyone assist?

First of all, the crest is WAY different than that of my Buff Laced and Golden Laced of the same age. (They are all going to be 6 weeks old on Tuesday.) It is forming very thin, very fine feathers that don't poof, but spread more up than out. And they are very shiny. Before anyone confronts me on being hypocrytical (sp?), since I myself say that crest sexing isn't accurate at this age, I'm noticing other things besides crest difference.

-She was the first one to hop the brooder gate.
-She's a bit flightier than the other chickies.
-She's the most daring of them, and often leads them around outside.

I'm getting a bit nervous. We're allowed to have roos where we live but I have two more. And they aren't especially friendly to humans and other chooks.

Now for the pics. I'm sorry for the poor quality. Take note: the pics are fuzzy and the crest looks more like how I explained in my previous description.

Here's little Olive Oil. Don't worry, the name will be changed if she's a he.

Notice the thin, wild crest in the following pictures. Remember, poor quality here.

What you can't really see: On the side, there is a or two feather pushing outward of the crest. All of my past crested roos have had this. See if you can catch those feathers.

A look at the probable-roo-to-be from the back.

Now here are my Buff and Golden Laced for comparison.

Bridget (Largest and poofiest crest of all of my Polish chicks. Loving disposition.)

Zuchinni (smallest crest of the three, but very poofy and pullet-like)

Any opinions? I know it's very early, but I'm hoping any of you have a catching eye that I don't. Any comments are appreciated.

Uggh, I have two roosters and ten hens. The last thing I need right now is another boy.

But with hope perhaps I can socialize him. Thanks for your thoughts! I have a strange feeling that if he's a boy, he'll be an early crower.

Please, even if the same things will be repeated I'd like to hear others' thoughts. I have to start accepting the name Edgar Allen Polish.

This is my silver lining!

And thanks for moving the thread, Mods.

I love your name choices.

I think the crest looks very roo-like, but I didn't see any wattles or a comb? I bet in the next week or so you'll know for sure when wattles or a comb flash red.

I got the top hat special from Ideal last fall, and it was supposed to be straight run. Every single crested bird I got was male! All six of them. Never again.

I hope your's isn't a roo, as my SL mohawk looks just like yours. She (I'm still hoping) is 5 weeks old, and has no other rooster like tendencies. Not to mention there's not a hint of redness in her comb and no wattles. But, her crest definitely looks different from the other 2. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

If I could use that name, I'd want him to be a him

Oh yeah, he looks like a he to me! Wow, was that an odd sentence or what! Oh boy it's late

An update!

Unfortunately, I don't have batteries for my camara at the moment and I'm not sure when I'd be abe to pick them up. Hopefully within the next week.

The chicks were moved outside a few days ago. They're still getting used to their new digs.

Mr. Edgar Allen Polish is still a bit skittish and his crest is now very large. He and the pullets are about 8 weeks old. His crest flops down in a frowny rainbow sort of look. But he is very pretty looking.

I don't know if I'm able to socialize him. He doesn't like to be held.

He has now started to get tiny feathers on his feet (?) and he has a toe-nail that is pushing through the toe, up! He also has a slightly deformed beak, but it isn't anything major. I guess this is what I'm expecting from Meyer's. It's a shame, I wish their quality was better. McMurray had better quality.

All of the Polish are developing beards and small muffs. I'll announce when pictures are posted. I really think that he is a male. But I'm open for any nice surprise!

Edited To Add: No redness in the face and his body looks similar to that of the others. No attempts to crow yet, either. And he has daily visual contact with the roosters. He isn't even roosting yet.
