Polish pictures

Raven, I don't know why my Polish, except for one, like being skinny, LOL. I wish I could say they were all plump.

I have switched their feed over the last few days to flock feed since I have 2 geese now. It's higher protein and maybe it will help. I've also added nutritional yeast with a high amount of B vitamins, and black oil sunflower seeds.

What do you feed yours?

I am using Tucker's Layer Feed. Was using the 15% Free Range Layer but going back to the 16% reg. Early in the Spring they will get the 22% Layer by Tucker to get all my girls in condition for breeding season. I have free choice feeders so it is in front of them always.

hi polish people!!
I don't have any polish's, but I'm in the process of hatching out 10 silkies (they are shipped ones from a BYCer) !!, but they are 2 that have these lumps on their heads, and I'm wondering if they might actually be polished, but you see I have never had any experience with polished...so yeah...?? anyone know what they might be??

thanks

They are silkies with vaulted skulls.

cool! thanks!, but what does vaulted skull mean....??
Vaulted skulls is where there is essentially a hole in the skull, where some of the brain emerges from. That part of the brain is no longer protected by the skull, but more so by cartilage, tough skin, and feathers. This means the birds will be more fragile in a sense, because something as simple as a misplaced peck could kill them.

I have vaulted skull silkies and have never had an issue with them. In fact as they grow the only way you can tell them apart from the non vaulted is they have a march larger ( more sought after ) crest!

That had been my experience as well, until one of the vaulted chicks developed wry neck. I brought him inside for a month and treated him, and just this week he was consistently much better so I returned him outside to his siblings. I'm certain it was due to an injury considering how well the treatment worked.

Well I'm glad your little one is recovering. I've been breeding silkies for 8+ years and have had the occasional vaulted skull and never had a problem. Mine free range with large fowl and they manage to keep out of trouble. In my experience wry neck is more often than not a thiamine B1 deficiency.
