I see pictures of polish chickens. I'm a bit confused with the head feathering. I know the roosters have "wild" hair. I have a question though about the hens. Some hens I see have nice rounded totally un-wild head feathers, but then I see hens that have head feathers much more like a roosters. Wild, with feathers sticking out. Why the difference?

Any one have an answer to this?

My 4 Polish hens all have rounded heads. (2 black/white, 2 buff) Pretty girls with friendly to aloof personalitys. I guess this is not a answer, but maybe a start. Maybe some are clipped for sight or someting.

the difference is breeding. if you breed properly they'll have nicely shaped crests with tight feathering in both sexes (longer and pointed in males). well formed symmetrical globular crests are what the aim is.

Perhaps you are viewing FRIZZLE Polish which would have "wild" topknots in both hens and roos. I breed smooth and frizzle bantam Polish and the smooth hens all have very tightly contained, large crests, the frizzle hens much more wild looking. Here are some photos for an example:
