I keep going back and looking at that site. It's really neat.

Does anyone have pics of their polish as chicks that they had grow up and knew the gender of? I'd like to see how this rule works out

Next time I'm hatching I'll do serial photos as birds age to show sexes developing. It'll be fun. If only I could sex my araucanas as easily as I can my Polish- what a blessing that would be!!
I'm looking over my flock and seriously missing Eggbid. What auction site do people think is now the best for the sale of show-quality birds?

Looking back, it seems to ring true in our case, at least for two birds

Ruthie is now Rudie

I have problems sexing my Polish until they are 4 month & the poof comes in well. I'll try the baby poof thing. Big poof boy, small poof girl. (Right?)

I'm not sure on Araucanas, but on my Ameraucanas I can feather sex them with being 90% correct. When they have pin feathers (between 1-3 days old) girls are long , short, long, short ; boys are all about the same size. I re-sex at 3 weeks of age if they are still around. Females flight feathers grow in lookng like an arch when wing is stretched out ; boys their front flight feathers grow faster than their back, so wing has noticably 2 feather heights when pulled out. This does not work with all breeds, but find it grest for my pure Brahmas, Ameraucans, and Turkens. (Does NOT work on Polish!)

Hope this helps with your Araucanas.

Not "Big Poof, Small Poof" no. You MUST look at the shape of the crest. Many a boy has a lovely large crest but it is tapered rather than round. I have pictures on my website.

I am having trouble understanding the poof thing. So if it's flat in the front that's male, and if it immediately goes round that's female. From above- if crest is oval then it's male, if crest is a circle than it's female.
In the chart listed on the website, the bigger poof is female, but in stcroixusvi's example the male has the larger crest.

Although like I said, in the batch of chicks itseemed like all of the reds had a big poof, the golden laced had medium poofs, and the buffs had small poofs.

They were straight run, too. So I am counting on a higher percentage of roosters.

I can't really tell how the front of the crest is on "rudy's" pic, but amy's crest seems to taper to me. What am I missing?

Cmsdvm, what is your take on my babies? Does attitude factor in at all? The babies with the "male shaped" crests are feathering in slower, but are smaller than the red so could be a couple of days younger. They are much more mellow and quieter than the red though.

I think this topic is really interesting

It is harder to tell with pet quality birds and pictures are harder too, of course. I'm used to the large show crests I breed for so all of your chicks look male to me, but if I saw them in person I might change my mind. Even I have a hard time if a batch I hatch is all one sex. I've had several hatches this year that were 100% male, so I kept second guessing myself.
