Very interesting to get the other side of the Polish story. I treat my chickens as pets so I suspect I wouldn't mind the "high maintenance" aspect. I do allow mine to free- range around our yard - do the Polish just prefer to stay In the pen? Maybe I should get two so they aren't alone?

Here are some of my kids. Although I am focusing on white crested black large fowl, I also have a cuckoo bantam hen.

I have the three and they run around the yard like crazy doing some kind of chciken chase. I don't let them out to range unless I am nearby, but not because they are polish. I have others too. I am just not willing to take a chance. The three get along great together and the also have a cuckoo marans that they grew up with. I don't find them any trouble but they do not do well getting rained on. I have them in a covered pen/run and occasionally I have given them a trim.

No it's not that, it a protection deal for them with the pens. If you are in an area without a lot of predators, it's not that bad (remember though dogs and house cats kill too) But here where I am, there's more wildlife than people , 50-1 probably, so I have to keep mine penned or they'd be gone tomorrow morning. If free ranged, I'd definitely suggest trimming the crest from around they eyes to help their vision, you dont have to get is all, just so the have a better field of view is all.

Have any of you polish keepers ever had to trim any of your birds' crests? Just a couple days ago i sadly decided to trim my mothers hens crest. It's been kinda icky here (and it's only gonna get worse!) and her crest was getting wet & dirty and she was running in circles a lot and seemed depressed and a little underweight too. She looks completely Stupid now, lol, but she seems a little happier and can see the food & isn't getting weighed down by wet feathers.

How do you guys trim their crests if you do? CrazyHead looks liek she has a Mullet now

but she was happy to be able to see her new Roo I brought home yesterday

(they're buff laced)

yep, lots of people have to, especially northern climates in the winter due to the water sticking to it when they drink. Just take a pair of scissors and trim as needed, nothing pretty about it, LOL, but it grows back

Well here's CrazyHead with her new "do" & new Roo

What do you guys think of them?

CH was a feed store rescue/pity buy.. she was being picked to death and was half bald when i got her. I just picked up the Roo from the local feed store I got my new chicks from, he's doing great so far but seems a little sweet on the LH hen, lol. I think he is also young, hatched early this year probably.

CH's tail looks thin because I accidentally pulled it out when I tried to catch her

Scared the crap out of me when it happened but i think she's coming into molt and thats why they came out so easily.

WHERE DID YOU GET THEM ???

These were bred by Crunchie. I got the 2 hens this spring at the PA chickenstock and the roo came to me this fall. All of the birds are bred by her though. Very nice Polish with nice personalities, they love to be held.
