several pages back folks were talking about using hair ties called scunchies. They are basicly cloth covered rubber bands. If you know anyone that sews and uses elastic while sewing for waistbands or cuffs etc. that would work also. Either tie or sew two ends together. The main purpose was to keep the crest out of their eyes and out of the food and water.

I have also found that if I give them something to drink water out of besides an open bowl they do better. The jar with the red bottom works really well for mine.

Yes I was thinking of that also. I really like the the hanging water containers with the nipple type spout. I haven't installed a larger system as of yet but that is the only way to go. Besides keeping the crests clean, the water is much nicer and the system cuts down on cleaning the water containers. My birds love clean water !

Now if only my white showgirl would stop taking dust baths sigh

I actually have a question about buying Polish chickens-
If you only get one, will the others try to peck the crest feathers off?

I love Polish chickens!

So far mine have all behaved well. I have four year old hens and this year I added one Polish cock, NN hen, hamburg hen and showgirl hen. All eight get along fine except the showgirl. She wants to be boss but my Welsummers are not listening. My Polish cock is not yet crowing much but I have heard him once or twice. I hope that he stays nice and mellow as now. I am working on getting a bantam flock together and will have polish in that also.

In my case YES...when my babies were growing 2 cockerels and a pullet, the one cockerel went after the other one...IDK why, tho... so I separated them.
While that was going on.

I had a pr with my silkies... that rooster was getting mean and attacking everything...so i put him in with the big girls. that settle him down but got my girl all upset...so i put the pr of babies in w/the silkies and my hen. She went right after both the new ones...and i see now that we 've got some head feather missing...

and i put my mean baby in with Phil(the rooster) and the big girls...i also see some feathers missing... i guess it's just the luck of the cards if they get along.....
