When I went out to check on the chicks the two hens are sitting side by side. I knew one was darker than the other but not how much darker. Went to take some pics and of course the battery needs charging. I'm going to try and post some pics again.

If I did this right this should be my pair of my Silver Laced Polish. I bought a bunch of chicks 2 years ago, that were supposed to be bantams and he was one of them. I then ordered a dozen Silver Laced Polish--I got 1 Gold Laced, 1 Silver hen and 9 roos.

Wow ! Lots of beutiful Polish birds out there ! I suspect as a breed they do not tolerate cold with their beatiful crests. How cold of temps can they tolerate before they have to have heated housing ? Thanks !

I'm in Northern CA and we get, maybe, a dozen nights of freezing during the winter. It doesn't seem to bother my chickens; but, then the freezing is not continuous.

Yeah ? ! ? !

And I betcha that they do tolerate the cold as long as they are kept dry. They are reputed to be very hardy. The trick is keep them out of the rain and snow and make sure that their water is available for them with a dispenser that allows them to keep their crests dry.

How do you normally water large crested Polish ? I just have a few hatchery chicks now & thinking about getting something of better quality if I can figure out how to maintain them thru our extreme winters.

Hi everyone..
I have 4 new black/ white crested polish bantams, hatched in April) 2 roos and 2 hens. we went to a chicken swap in Irmo Sc and my mom saw them and had to have them, so I bought them for her. they have been quaretined for 1 full week now and 1 to go.. as much for their safety.. I have all large fowl breeds. I was telling my mom that I really don't think we can put them with all my big girls and I have one very macho LF golden laced Cochin. so we are going to make them their own coop/run...

I've not dealt with these little guys and they are very flighty. to where when I enter their run ( covered with tin roof) I worry they are going to knock themselves out. ( the girls are not as flighty and can be caught easily and held. ) but the roos are a different story. For these little guys how small can I make it so that they still have room inside and out but small enough to be easily and safely caught and tamed. also would it be ok to split them up into pairs. ? right now the roos are big buddies and hang together.. but I think that they would tame down faster if it was just two in a coop/run. and it just be smaller.

thanks for the advise
Pink

I just use a regular waterer. There are heated ones you can buy or do a search and I think I saw a site that talked about making one. On the days that we have freezes, not as often as you, I go out early and break the layer of ice. Since the hoses are usually frozen I take out a teapot of hot water to melt the ice in the waterer.

I'm in Northern CA and while we do freeze, it's not for extended periods and mostly not during the day so it hasn't been a problem as long as they have a dry place to hang out. But I only had one through last winter ( have 9 now). I've read that you want to make sure they can get water without getting their crest wet, so it won't freeze.
