I am currently using fine hay as bedding in my coop, I read somewhere that this will give my chickens respritory problems. Is that true? And what does everyone else use for bedding. I have a big coop so it needs to be cheap. Please help

Got my first batch of SL chicks in today! They're so cute! All 20 chicks (10SL polish & 10 ameracauna) arrived happy & healthy. Can't wait to watch them grow up.

Cook farms, I've always used hay for bedding bc I have a 400sq ft coop & its cheapest. Never had any respiratory issues in my birds. Not saying it can't happen, just never had any problems in my experience.

Who did you get yours from?
My came from Ideal, ordered 25, all have died from something except for 5, not sure that they're gonna make it either. All the other chicks that are in with them seem to be doing fine.

Oh no! I hope that doesnt happen with mine too! I ordered them from ideal as well...Im sorry your babies died! Did they replace them? This is only my second time dealing with ideal & I have yet to be disappointed.

They didn't really die as baby babies, they were well over 48 hours old when they started falling over. I think their top knots just doesn't have very good constitutions to begin with.
I've ordered from Ideal twice the other time was before and with a different breed. They didn't do too well either after they got older. I've never had as much loss with the other two hatcheries I've used. I think I'm through with Ideal.

Well I hope the remaining babies survive fine! My last order was 10 turken pullets from them & they survived...ish. Shortly after they were old enough to join the rest of the flock i discovered hawks LOVE turkens, only one survived. Hopefully this is the last time I need hatchery stock. I made the mistake of giving up my mixed flock of 18 about a month ago then decided I just can't live without chickens! Its been a hot one in the coop here in houston so hopefully they can take it. I added a shallow pan of ice water in the brooder pen when they started looking floppy. Who needs a heat lamp in the summer in texas? More like a fan...lol.
