Polish?

I need to know if a Polish would be a good layer. And my friend is planning on getting a Polish but she is only a beginner. Would a Polish be a good beginner breed? What about an Old English or a Sebright? Cochin maybe?

Some lines of polish are good layers, others not. It's kind of random. Crested birds are more vulnerable to predators, especially from above.
Old English and sebrights are poor layers. Cochins are a little better but not much.

I don't know what kind of chicks they are getting now. Do you know any other good breeds that would be good for:

1. beginner breed
2. good layer
3. good 4-H show bird
4. hardy to hot summers, cold winters, and a small coop
5. social around other birds
