These are not States that are instituting these petitions, it is relatively a few individuals in the State. You might be interested to know that regarding the State of Texas it gets more from the Federal government then it pays in to the Federal government in taxes. To me it is a laughable joke that is a kneejerk (emphasis on jerk) reaction to the election and will blow away just as quickly as it started.

Not just a few individuals from within the state...people from other states can sign these things too, and have. So, you know, not going to hold my breath terribly long waiting for this to happen. X)

I think the way politics are playing out right now is making us feel even more divided than we actually are. Texas isn't a red state, its a purple state, just like all the other purple states. This is a really interesting map:

It is sad to me that political discourse is the way it is right now - just bunch of bickering and fit throwing. I think it's time for more honest, thoughtful questions and dialogue that is based on realistic solutions.

There are more than 25.6 million people in Texas. That means only .003% them have signed to secede. Too much media cover in my opinion.

Since the 1940's the term "states rights" has been used as a code word for the ability of states to be able to practice racial discrimination and, maybe, because of that, it has gotten a bad rap. I would be very interested to hear what specific powers you believe have been taken away from the states by the federal government, assuming you would want them given back to the states. For example, I can not imagine that even the most radical state's righter would want to strike the Supremacy Clause and have the states make their own international treaties. So, what powers would you like the States to be able to exercise?

In Texas it looks like the only truly blue areas are in the Valley and El Paso and the only truly red areas are the suburbs of Houston and Dallas. The rest is purple. I think it is also interesting that very few states are only one color, Hawaii seems to be mostly blue, and Utah mostly red (except for SLC); the rest seem evenly distributed, i.e. purple.

What you'll find in many of the people who sign these petitions is that they've become tired of large population centers dictating everything in the state. I lived in downstate Illinois for almost all of my adult life. There are 2 Illinois, one is downstate and the other is Chicago. State politics there are ruled by Chicago. Pennsylvania has Philadelphia as their example. It is stated that all you need to do to win Pennsylvania is carry the 4 counties around Philly.

These are interesting times and the divisions need to be addressed.

I know that our nation is facing difficult times. If we can peacefully discuss possible solutions perhaps we can come to some sort of accord on how to handle our problems. The fact that the Federal Government is pursuing policies that a good many people in this country cannot abide causes worry. Have they turned a deaf ear to us? Who is going to pay for all of that government spending?

I am afraid they will raid our retirement accounts and pensions and give us worthless government bonds as happened in other countries such as Argentina. Yes, you get bonds in turn, but then the value is either taxed away or inflated away.

In the former Soviet Union, the bonds could not be sold nor cashed, but simply exchanged for another bond. In the end, they were worthless.

What I don't understand is why do I always hear that my social security won't be there for me when I get old and I have been putting into the system since I was 18 yrs old? Why wouldn't MY money be there for ME? Why are they giving MY money to someone else? Isn't that called stealing? :/

I do not think that I am being overly optimistic if I say that I am certain that your SS will be there when you are ready to retire. The retirement age may go up a few years, but it will be there. I am not as optimistic about medicare. I think that it will be there in some form but I can not say what that will be.
