poll: are you legal or an outlaw?

I guess we're outlaws sorta.

Suppose to have 5 acres I think and we have just under that. We live quite rural so as long as the neighbors don't complain we can fly under the radar! You can't see the coop from the road but ya sure can hear the rooster.

We're mostly legal.......city ordinance says 2 hens without asking neighbors, absolutely no roos, and if you have more than 2 hens you have to have the permission of any homeowner living within 80 feet of your coop. We have 4 hens and all but one of the homes within 80 feet are rentals, so I asked the neighbors in that one house and they said they didn't care, and the renters I am just asking as I see them. The one landlord I've seen wouldn't care if I had a flock of sheep, as long as they didn't get on his property.

80 feet luckily is not that far. If we had that rule, I have only one neighbor that close(across the street) and she has chickens herself. I'm sure you'll be fine with 4 chickens.

We live within "city limits" The animal control officer knows we have the birds.. I have had "words" with her on them being pets, not livestock. My birds are quieter than the neighborhood dogs. They arent roaming the streets like the pit bulls I have had to catch and call on recently

.. So, unless I let the girls get smelly.. or somehow get a rooster. I think they will continue to leave us alone.

I live outside the city limits so I'm governed by county ordinance (which is more chicken-friendly)... And I WAS legal when I had 3 hens.

And I was still legal as I unloaded the first 3 of the next 6 I brought home.

But my last 3... well let's just say they fall into a grey area. Because I can rationalize it that the 2 Crested Polish are technically classified as "ornamental" species and so they aren't REALLY "farm stock" because they COULD be for show. And the Barred Rock is technically a "mixed use" bird so if worse came to worse, we could say, oh she's just one we're raisin' for eatin'! Of course she's too pretty to eat... as long as she's laying eggs anyway.

So I've rationalized it well and can explain to anyone why I am TECHNICALLY legal.

My neighbors will never complain because 1- we don't have a roo, and 2- they're awesome!

Outlaw... sorta.

Here in Charleston, SC, you can have chickens if any neighbors within 150 feet ok it and the city inspects your set up.

On one side are neighbors who can clearly see the coop when they're on their steps, perhaps even hear them when they get real clucky. Not worried about them because we're real friendly with them, and plus they're drug dealers so they aren't interested in stirring up the law (trust me, better neighbors than you might think they'd be).

On the other side is a woman who can't see the coop and probably can't hear them.

At the back are neighbors that we helped build a fence (in the spirit of neighborliness and currying some don't mess with my chickens favor), and technically has ok'd it (said he didn't even know we had them... pretty solid evidence that he's not bothered by them).

The guy who inspects the coop is the man I got my chickens from in the first place! He never saw the coop but he'd be fine with it. Those ladies are living the life.

Legal
Here in the Uk we only need to register with DEFRA if we have 25+ birds

However my chickens choose to hide in a shed when my landlord comes round

This thread looks like an animal control officer's jackpot!

BTW, I'm legal now, but if they incorporate me, I just don't know what I"ll do, I guess I"ll have to legal up so that when the inevitable knock on the door comes, I'll be able to happily show them around.

I can't figure it out. Probably outlaws. It's all vague. Two houses down has horses, chickens, ponies, and all sorts of stuff. Next to them is a great horse/chicken combo. It's adorable, the horse and chicken are always together in the yard. I think there is a dog too. Then there are a ton of rabbits and such.

I think though that my side of the street it changes. I can't figure it out. I decided I don't need to worry though, the chickens are wicked quiet and my neighbors don't care. We are sort of a mind your own business but friendly sort of neighborhood.
