Poll/ How Much Should I Sell Chicks For????

Be careful about only looking at the lowest price they are being sold for. Sure you may be able to get hatchery birds at a lower price per bird. you also may have to buy 25 of them or non at all. My local feed store resells hatchery chicks and you still have to buy at least 6. Also consider the quality of your chicks to those of the Hatchery. Nobody has to deal with the Roo Peanuts when they buy from you. they also can bring back a chick that was sexed wrong. They can see first hand exactly what they are buying. Nah I don't see the comparison very well between that and a Hatchery. Let them pay for what they get. you have nearly one third sold at that price. How long have you had them for sale?

I'm answering this with not being terribly familiar with your breed, but I'd take them to a swap meet...are the parents NPIP tested or have they done anything at shows? If so, I'd post a sign saying so...I'd only offer a discount if they buy more than 2. Yes, it is a lot of work, and if you have pedigree, show placings or other special designations or treatment, they are worth more than hatchery chicks. People have to be prepared to pay for quality, and to get what they pay for. Hatcheries are generally not the mecca of standard bred poultry and people will have to pay more to a private breeder if they want something nicer than the average. The money to run the incubator alone has to be justifiable by asking more for the birds.

OOOH I never, ever, ever, allow just one chick to be sold. Ever. Two or more only, provided with an instruction sheet for the first 16 weeks of life.

Right now I have Olive Eggers for sale, and am asking $2.50 each. Plan to have Barnevelders in another month and will ask $4 each.

I have been selling my Wellies and CM chicks for $5 each straight run. I usually only hatch a few of these at a time because I only have a few layers of each. Usually the buyer just takes them all. I was getting $2 each for Australopes, but i sold the entire flock. I would rather sell 5 or 6 chicks for $5 each than sell 10 or 15 Australope chicks at $2 each. As the Junkman said, it cost just as much to feed a cheap breed as it does an expensive one. Sometimes the most money you can make is the money you didnt spend makeing it.

I also just sold 69 mixedbreeds for $.50 each. these eggs came from a barnyard flock and didnt cost me anything except the electricity for the incubator.

I'll have Wheaten and Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas for sale at $5 each next week.

If your BRs are show quality, you can charge that much.

The chicks have been going for right around $3 at the auction here. Hens with chicks are much cheaper. Generally $10 or under for a hen with 10 or so peeps (some had 18 last time around). I wouldn't be too disappointed in getting $3 a chick at the auction, to be honest. I wouldn't be disappointed to pay that price either, if it was what I was looking for.
