POLL: Legal Limits

The city allows 3 hens, no roosters or bees (It baffles me, too, how they put the bees in there) but I think as long as the chickens are not disturbing anyone they don't give a flaming fig about how many I have. A couple of years ago there was a big fuss about chickens because some people became upset about barnyard animals around their multi-million dollar homes. The thing I can't figure out is why people move to a city where there is a riding stable, city maintained riding trails behind the lots, and even crosswalks with buttons set high so that riders can use them, and then are horrified to discover that people keep "barnyard" animals!

I am happily unmarried, and am at peace with my insanity.

I have great self control about getting more animals. I love the ones I have, but I have 3 dogs because I do not want 4, and I have 4 chicks because I do not want 5!

My city allows one chicken per 1500 square feet (6 chickens max) and NO roos.
My lot size allows for 5 chickens, but I've got 7. It happens.

I got two extra because I figured I'd end up with a couple roos and have to give them away. Luckily

I got all hens.

My spouse is all in. He's left most of it up to me, but has readily handed out the cash to make this all happen. We've got some expensive eggs, that's for sure!!
He'd be up for more, and I would love to have more, but I feel blessed that they are all still alive, all still hens, and all still healthy. I'd be afraid that getting more would mean I'm realllly pushing my luck and asking for trouble.

I am not sure where the lines are drawn- but according to San Diego city ordinances some parts of Lemon Grove allow only 3 hens, and some parts allow up to 25! I can't imagine that I am in the 25 hen area, I believe it also depends on the size of your lot- needless to say I played it safe and went with.. 5

My bf thinks I'm totally crazy, but he has known that all along- I think the chicken obsession simply sealed the deal!

I definitely suffer from chicken math.. I started with just 3, but my coop fit 5.. sooo why not?

I have 3. All hens although technically you can have a roo but it can be removed if someone complains.
Here you're allowed 10 even if you live in the middle of the city. I love Austin.

My city/ town told me that as long as they are not a nuisance with noise or smell that there is no limit. (i got that in writing)
I had purchased 6 black sex-link pullet chicks. One turned out to be a roo. When he started to crow it actually attracted neighbors to ask questions about backyard chickens some even mentioned they liked his crowing. But atlas the neighbor right next door was not amused. She told me in a rather impolite way also. Mr. roo is now out in the county on a farm.

I will worry about chicken limits when someone monitors all the loose/barking dogs, stray cats, boomboxes in the middle of the night, the neighbors horses/donkeys/rat problem. So how were those free, delicious egg I dropped off to be a good neighbor??

My city allows for no chickens unless you are on a one acre lot (New ordinanace as before they were not legal at all). I think about 4 homes qualify under these guidelines. I have 8 hens and live on a little over a quarter acre. I figure it is my land and I will do as I wish as long as it doesn't bug my neighbors or cause any threat to anyones health. I have heard that after we get some more new councilman in this year there will be another push to allow for a few chickens on any size lot. Hopefully this will pass so I can be a law abiding citizen again.

The chickens won over the spouse. He did think I was nuts when I first told him I wanted to get a few. He says I can have more if I want but I think our current number is just right, until we move out of town and have more land/room to expand.
