I don't think the two are actually that different. Its all just cheddar mixed with other ingredients to change the texture.
Hmm maybe not 🤔 idk. I know it depends though cause this one certain store their American is like dry and crumbly and also super thick and then another brand as well as the Kraft stuff is the traditional sticky plasticy kinda stuff so not sure about the dry one but yeah.
 
It stinks but is really good on a dark rye or pumpernickel.
There was always some in our refrigerator in a jar covered with wax paper and sealed. My father would eat it as you have suggested plus a slice of raw onion - only when he had a really bad cold. :lau I would leave the house whenever that bottle exited the refrigerator. :sick
