I am setting up my coop this weekend and it is going to be on a cement slab. Trying to think how i can have a large dirt area in there for dust bath, scratching. I was thinking of using a plastic pond and fill with dirt/ sand and then pine on top of the concrete in the other part of the run. Anyone done this? Good or bad idea? The pond sits 18" tall.

Hi! And Welcome to BackYardChickens!!!! I'm setting up my new chicken yard as we speak and I'll be putting a kiddy wading pool from Family Dollar in there for the dust bath. We'll be adding a mix of dirt, wood shavings and diatomaceous earth.

18" tall shouldn't be a problem for an adult bird but juveniles may not be able to access the dust bath unless you provide a ramp/ladder for them. Good Luck!!

Really, this is a brilliant idea...18 inches for adults...and sure, put stones around (solidly), you don't want babies getting hurt...or a small stump out side for them to jump up on and then into the pool...it is gonna look GREAT!!

Wood ash is a good additive...fireplace or wood stove or outdoor firepit...very good for chickies...and for extra dirt if needed, bagged topsoil...mine love that....
