i built my ducks and geese a small pond. i would like to plant some boggy type plants around it but dont know what plants are safe. can anyone help me with suggestions?
Safe? As in safe FROM the ducks??? If you plant anything around the pond and want it alive for more than 5 minutes, you need to surround it with chicken wire or it will be nibbled to death.
Well, frankly, unless this pond is at least 50 or so feet in diameter, you might as well not bother. Even a pair of ducks can be incredibly destructive to plant materials. In a larger pond, you have enough room to plant enough plants that they stand a chance if you don't have too many ducks.
Some of the emergents that are duck safe are arrowhead (aka duck potato), water celery, cattails, water lilies, water cress, bloody dock, pickerel rush, water plantain, marsh marigolds, perennial hibiscus.
Your ducks will find them all very delicious and thank you for the salad bar you so kindly provided.
If something is poison, it usually doesn't taste good so the ducks will leave it alone. If it does taste good it is toast without being surrounded by wire...like this...
that looks like it is about the size of mine. mine is an old rubbermaid tank. the hardest thing is keeping it clean. i use a aquairium siphon. planned on putting it in garden for green manure tea. i usually add water everyday and let it overflow inbetween the cleanings.
