"poo trays"

That's great! My idea is to make it easy and we often go out of town also. I have some friends that can come over to help, but easy really is Key. I will send pictures when I can figure out how to do. What kind of chickens do you have?

Thanks so much for the advise. I hope they like yellow. As soon as weather cools off, we are going to get their enclosed protected run done. My husband is working on electric chicken door he made with a rotisserie motor. I will also send a picture. Not sure how to do it, just learning. We should have it done within a month. What kind of chickens do you have and which ones are best layers?
Not sure if you were asking me, the other folks who commented, or all of us, but I'll answer first here! I started with 22 chickens: 5 each of Easter Eggers, Golden Laced Wyandottes, and Red Sex Links; 2 Cuckoo Marans; 2 Speckled Sussex and 3 Buff Orpingtons. Three of the chicks turned out to be roosters - one of the Sussex, a Red Sex Link, and a Production Red that got sneaked into the mix as a Red Sex Link......they are now in freezer camp. Then I planned to process the 5 Wyandottes - mine were total bullies and had this gang mentality. If one was picking on another chicken the other four would come over to help her administer a beating, and none of them showed any mercy to their victim. I was just waiting for them to put on some size. The Buff Orpingtons were nice but the eggs were always so small. A neighbor had lost her entire flock to a wild dog just before they started laying. She's temporarily a "single mom" with 4 kids (hubby managed to get another DUI so he's out of the picture until he's finished serving his time) and was counting on the chickens and her garden to supplement the family's pantry because she doesn't want to end up getting assistance. So I had her come over here, we packed up the Wyandottes, two of the BOs, and her little daughter fell in love with the chicken with the polka dots, so the Speckled Sussex pullet found a new home too. I went over with a roll of hardware cloth and she and I repaired the weak spot in her setup, and I pointed out a couple of other things that should be changed. I told her about the issues with the Wyandottes but in their new surroundings she hasn't had any problems with them. I may have just had too many chickens in one space, leading to problems and the responsibility for that rests squarely on my shoulders. Peace has returned to my coop and run.

So now I have 5 Easter Eggers, 1 Buff Orpington, 2 Cuckoo Marans, and 3 Red Sex Links. The RSLs are great layers, very calm, and consistent. They were the first to start laying, all three at 19 weeks, and they were the first to transition from peewee pullet eggs to large and x-tra large. And I love my Easter Eggers just as much...their blue eggs range from small to medium right now but we're getting a few more large eggs over the past week or so. Still not really impressed with the BO I kept - eggs are always peewee to small but I kept her because she's so doggone sweet, and even though her eggs aren't large she is regular as clockwork and I'm hoping the size will increase. The Marans, well, they're okay. Eggs are all over the chart size wise and they aren't really very dark yet, but hope springs eternal.

And remember, my experiences with the varieties of chickens I chose are just that - MY experiences. Chickens are as individual as people with their own behavior quirks. The issues I had with the Wyandottes are not typical of all Wyandottes, some folks love their Buff Orpingtons and are getting really nice eggs, and so on. Some chickens can be slightly overcrowded and thrive, some don't react well to that. My coop is 6'x8' and I have a huge run, but 19 chickens are still 19 chickens and if they FELT overcrowded then there would be problems. Like I said, that was MY fault for not taking that into account and I won't make that mistake again.

Thanks so much for all the good advice. Chicken Obsessed you sure gave me some good information. I am trying to do my homework before we get our baby chicks and I know the only way to learn is to jump right in.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend and I look forward to hearing from you again.

Off to Lowes!
