Poop Board Lining material

To each his own, and whatever works.....I don't put anything on my poop boards. They are painted so the wood is sealed. Every morning I use a 6" scraper and scrape everything into a bucket, I spray the boards down with vinegar and wipe them off. Done. Below the poop boards on the main floor I have shavings, which are spot cleaned if necessary and replaced likewise periodically as necessary, but with the poop boards they stay pretty clean.

@aart not sure if you have them where you are located but do you have any Mason supply places to check for Mason sand? To me it's nothing more than washed sand.
I learned a lot about sand while making my own concrete mixes for sculpture years ago; I used different cements, different sands, different admixes.
All the colloquial and common names for sand(river, construction, play, blahblahblah) are worthless, there's no standards, you've got to look at it very closely to know what you're getting. Made a huge difference in my concrete mixes, so I had to study it, and also applies when using for chickens.

The quikrete brand/type shown in this post was the best I found, both for sculpture mix and chicken board 'bedding'...most others are way too fine and dusty. The place I used to buy it doesn't carry it anymore, I didn't try to hard to find it elsewhere.

I was just coming on here to see how thick you ended up making your PDZ Aart! Now that you've gone that shallow what depth of edging would you use? That is if your poop board were a boot tray, how tall would the edges be?

I'd leave it as is, some bird roost on the board edges instead of the roosts.
My now retired lumber guy used to rip 2x4's for me, he was really good at it, I used those 1.5 x 1.75's for all kinds of stuff...way better than any nominal 2x2 you could get.

I’ll be ripping stuff down anyway. The guys who did our siding left all their “scaffolding” here, so I have stacks and stacks of beat up 2x8 material. I salvaged whatever I could from the house build to use for future projects!

Just finished up my first cleaning using PDZ. Kinda reminds me of fine cat littler. I like it. Much less waste will be going into the manure pile. I was starting to get a nice mound of pine chips this should cut back nicely on the waste. I have it roughly 1/4" thick.
Gotta love trying something new and having it work out. :thumbsup
