Poop Board Sizes

I’m wondering how big to make a poop board. I know it’s 1sqft per bird for the roosts. But more so the width of the poop board. I’ve seen 20”, 2 feet, etc. Is there a general rule of thumb to follow for width that the poop misses the poop board? Planning on making the roost in the middle of the poop board

Chickens poop the most at night while on the roost, so you want the poop board to extend past the roost. They don't always fact same way, you want the poop board to extend past the roost (both sides) at least 12 - 18" ... Their butts hang over past the roost. You may want to wait and see what others have to recommend

My roost is centered 13" over the boards. The boards are 24" wide.
I had the roosts lower but then it was harder to get the scoop under the roost to clean and during roost time rumble, the birds walking along the boards looking for a spot were easy targets for head shots from the roosted birds.
They splatter the walls when they have a thinner than usual load. But the vast majority of it hits the boards.

You can see some of the splatter on the walls here. Having the board 6"-12" wider would help that but then it would be more difficult to scoop the back of the boards.

The higher the roost the wider the board needs to be.
Mine are 24" with roost centered and ~8" high from the board.
I use a hoe to drag the the litter towards the front to be scoop/siftes.

I created what I call a “straw bale” poop board. I am guessing you could probably stack straw bales as tall as you needed and just make the legs a little longer for support. I wish I had done this with all of mine rather than going through the huge amount of effort it took to fasten them to the wall. Our straw bale poop boards took less than 30 minutes to make from start to finish and we used scrap materials making it free. Of course the width of the poop boards is the width of your straw bale.

Huge amount of money and effort…

Cheap and fast and what’s even better, portable for people like me that change their minds every week on how the barn should be!
