We're new to the world of chickens. Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer. We have 4 hens (probably just over a year old). My 8 year old just announced that his "Chocolate Plume" has a "poop cake." He told me that he had read about chicks having this problem but not mature hens. The poop is more on the feathers below her vent and not the actual vent. Would appreciate any and all advice.

Thanks,

yuk..I had this when mine were about 6months old and before I found this website...I took the hose and washed her butt-and cut all the feathers off that wouldnt wash-she didnt like it but I can tell you she was much happier when it was done and she was much happier and cleaner-

I call them "Poop Rocks". Some hens seem to be more prone to them than others. You just have to do a "poopectomy" from time to time.
