Hey there. I have a ten month old banty rooster who has a butt problem. I noticed he was straining and squealing so I brought him in and soaked him. He had a couple poop clods stuck to his butt which came off easy, but, his vent was plugged with a hard lump of poop. I've bathed him 5 times, over three days. I'm using warm water with sunlight dish soap and Epsom salts. I soak him for ten to 15 minutes then I roll him up in a towel, lay him on his back and give him a shot of warm water and canola oil up his butt. Or at least I try to. The poop plug is like a doughnut with a tiny hole in the centre. I put the syringe (no needle) in the hole and squirt. He isn't very happy about this. The poop doughnut part is like a poop and skin callus. It's hard and inflexible. cracked in a couple spots - it looks kind of like it is raw and weepy skin under the crack. The poop callus ring thing is coming away a bit at the top but if I tug he cries and it bled a bit so I haven't pulled at it. This piece that flips down reveals there is still a solid looking plug of poop in his vent. After I incur this Indignity upon him, I further traumatize him by keeping him in the towel, on his back, in the bottom of the tub and I aim the hand held shower head at his vent. Poor beast :/ After, I put him in a box near the woodstove overnight. I repeat in the morning, then after he's dried a bit, I let him out with everyone else. My chickens are free range during the day. They all have access to water, layer pellets, lots of kitchen scraps (my mom and aunt freeze theirs for us) and any goodies they can scratch up in the yard or woods. He isn't eating great but he's taken a bit of scrambled egg from my hand. He's never been handled a lot so this is pretty stressful for him. His poops are nasty. Green, grainy looking but well formed, very little urates and incredibly stinky. Clear the house stinky.

What else can I do. Any suggestions? Words of wisdom?

Now with pictures!!

Oh -- And I put some polysporin ointment around and on the poop plug thing. Anyone have any suggestions? AM I doing the right thing?

If it smells that bad, there may be infection involved. People on here have all kinds of concoctions with antibiotics or probiotics that might clean up on the inside, but I've never tried any of them. If he isn't part of a breeding program (or really even if he is) you might want to cull him. If he has some kind of vent deformity you wouldn't want that passed on to potential female progeny.

With my hen I believe she had a fungal and bacterial infection, but much of the smell came from the poop being backed up. Once the plug is out, if the smell doesn't go away, one would need to figure out if it's fungal, bacterial or both and treat accordingly or cull.
