Ok i noticed one of my chicks had dried up poop near its butt but I saw it poop later that night. The next day it had more dried poop. I heard its really bad when a chick can't poop. I don't know how to remove the poop without harming it. They seem so fragile and I don't want to manhandle them. Please help quick.

We always yank it off, feathers and all. It hurts but without the feathers it won't happen again. It's called pasty butt and it can kill the chick.

You can use warm water and rub the poop out. You should also be able to see the vent and that should be cleared ie opening and closing with no poop in the way. A few of mine had poo stuck to them but never covered the vent. Just dry them off and stick them back under their heat lamp. Good as new!

Wash the poop off and dry really well then put a little oil around the area to help the poop not stick anymore. I don't think yanking it off is a good idea.

Ok first time chicken owner what excatly is the vent. Man I'm so scared to handle them like that i might be rethinking this being a chicken owner. They scare me with every little thing like their my kids.

After using warm water to soften, crush with a rag and wipe off. Then to prevent it from coming back take a Q-tip and dip it in Olive oil then apply a coat of the OE on and around the chickens vent.

The vent is where they poop/lay eggs out of. But during pasty butt phase just poop, but yes your eggs will come out the same hole.

Don't freak out, I am a first time chick owner and I had one with pasty butt too. I held a nice warm compress on the little chick ass and GENTLY got the dry poo off, then I put a small amount of apple cider vinegar in their water for about a week and also put some hydrocortizone on it's booty once a day for 3 days. she's pooping like a champ now. just a little TLC is all she needs. from first timer to first timer, it's O K! take a deeeep breath...in through the nose, out through the mouth...and stop worrying

good luck!
