You can have chickens and expect to not touch poo.. lol

Oh - that's a good sign. You may not need to use the lube.

With my first two chicks that came from the feed store with pasty butt, it didn't return after the first cleanup.

Two wks ago, I got a silkie from the feed store that continued with the paste butt for 5 days. After the second time of cleaning her, I added the lube and it seemed to stop it from sticking. Now she's been fine for a week.

I didn't add anything to the water. THanks for the update. Pics would be nice.

I had one with my very first hatch. This was pre-BYC, so I didn't know any better - I picked it off, little by little. It worked just fine; I sort of used my fingernail to split the big chunk into smaller ones (I know, gross) then I slowly pulled it off. With the poo came her fluff, but this ended up being a good thing - nothing around her vent for the poo to stick to. She pooped immediately in my hand when I cleared part of her vent, then after I got the rest of her cleaned up I put her back down and she pooped AGAIN in the brooder - a big pile. We named her DooDoo!

There was one at TSC with a really bad poopy butt last night when I picked my babies up... I didnt want to bring it home because there was a bit of raw looking naked skin at the edge, but I did tell the lady at the register, who is a chicken mama herself so I know she was going to take care of it after we left.

I had 3 with poopy butts last night when I got home. I took them in the bathroom and trickled warm water on their bum while I worked at it...and they all 3 fell asleep during the bath... too cute!

I have done it both ways. Ofcourse I did the warm water soak and gentle pulling way, but I also do the fast rip the bandage off way. I think the birds like it done and over fast and it gets rid of those nasty vent hairs.

I am very careful not to pull if the vent is coming along with the poop.
