poopy butt

my buff orphington has a gross amount of poop built up on her behind. I read some stuff about cleaning it off. some people said to use soap, others said that soap is bad. What do you think? I also read that you can trim the feathers back there, has anyone done this too?

I have a few hens like that now, but I'm waiting until warmer temperatures to dunk their behinds. I would use Dawn or a similar dishwashing detergent in a pan of warm water since many people use that for washing their showbirds. Just get her bum wet then towel her off. Keep her inside in a cage for a few hours to dry if you can.
