Update!
It was a protein deficiency after all! I realized my mistake the first day I separated Mean Chicken. When I switched the girls to layer feed I had gotten the style of feed that has pellets as well as cracked corn and other whole foods. Mean Chicken was eating the whole stuff and wouldn’t touch the pellets. I switched the whole flock to a 17% crumble, separated Mean Chicken out of sight for a week and supplemented her with some extra meal worms and occasional meat and fish scraps. I did a “see, don’t touch” reintroduction for a few hours and then let her back into the run with the others. We’ve had no feather plucking issues since!
