Poor chilly girls.(frosty pic added)

Here is another lighting question. If I wanted to get 16 hours of light I would need to turn their lights on at 1am, since it gets dark here at 5pm. Thats seems kind of extreme. How much light should I be shooting for in the darkest part of winter? I've heard 14-16 hours. Either way if it all happens in the morning it would need to come on super early. Thats why I was running it in the morning and night. Now I'm more confused than ever.

they need sweaters lol

Yep, my light comes on at 1am. I moved their food inside. DH asked why, I told him that otherwise by the time I let them out in the morning it's way past noon for them

Baloney to the early morning light. That's all I'd need, fussing and clucking and crowing and Hey let us out at 2 freaking AM. I set my light to go on at 4 and off at about 8:30. They're fine.

there's a truth to that. i like to be up and feed early, but try not to do it regularly for the same reason. i dont' want them waking me up early expecting it. and they would, believe me, they would.

I don't have a roo, and my girls are quiet, so I just let the light come on early and off early. Food and water are inside, but they are eager to get their scratch at 7am.
