My neighbors dog got a hold of my prize winning Rhode Island and ripped out her tail feathers. She is fine but it really does activate me.

Greetings from Texas! We have free-range chickens, and the biggest predator problem is neighborhood dogs. Be glad that your redhead only lost her tail feathers, and not her life.

was she free ranging? You can't control your neighbor or his dog but, you can build a safe, strong, predator proof run for her - with covered top if need be. Free ranging is always risky unless you have livestock guardian dogs.

!!! Sorry to hear that she was injured, hope she gets better!

Do chicken tailfeathers grow back? i just saw a video at a wildlife sanctuary where they were actually super gluing tail feathers on a hawk. They were as careful as can be, and a hawk needs tail feathers to fly, and he was later released successfully. I wouldn't do it if the feathers will grow back, but if you want to see it Google "Imping", the term for this.
