Poor Hubby just had to explain the birds and bees of chickens

Some of the best conversations I've had were about chicken reproduction.

It's hilarious! Here are some excerpts:

NONE of my friends knew ANYTHING about it. The best though is explaining why some of the hens need saddles.

"Sex gear for chickens?!"

Just when I think they're becoming educated I get a question like "Are there both hens AND roosters of that breed?" "I thought some kinds of chickens only have hens."

To quote this same person after seeing a pile of ducks mating in her yard and finally realizing what they were doing. "Duck's are so x-rated"

Okay, this got me thinking, so last night I asked my DH How he thought eggs got fertilized. He figured the rooster did it after the egg was laid. My adult step-DD thought the chicken got "pregnant". It was funny, but sad.

DH knew the birds & bees of chicken sex ed.
His issues was when a big Buff Orp preferred him to our banty roo. When he realized why she crouched when she saw him he yelped, "Now that's just wrong!"
He learned to laugh about it, though...

Maybe somewhere on the BYC FAQ there should be an answer about how chickens have sex, and where the parts are. That way, when a newbie that doesn't know, or a spouse just doesn't "get it", we can simply refer them to the link!!!

I am glad I am not the only one who has had to explain this to people!! everyone I tell about my hens asks if I have a roo as well. if I say no, they want to know how I get eggs....

did ANYONE pay attention in biology class????

In my biology class 22 years ago.... wow that makes me feel old.... they didn't cover anything like that. Heck, the book we used said that there were bones in the human penis.... the little drawing of it made it look like a cat's tail bones. So even if they DID, there is no telling what they learned from it

Unfortunately, there is a very large gap between a person and their food. Luckily for us, we research well and got lots of good info before doing this whole chicken thing. Both my wife and I were not quite city kids, but definitely not farm kids.
