If they begin to lay internally, they may still have a bright red comb. Many hens have this problem after a certain age.

Thank you all for your ideas. We had the vet give her antibiotics, and we tried nutridrops, cider vinegar, and the scrambled eggs, but she became slower, slipped into a coma, and after a day peacefully died. Our oldest and friendliest hen. We will have to try and search out another Columbine (not easy in the NE of Scotland).
