I'm totally new at this. I have 3 RIR-RIW mix roosters and 1 hen. I bought 4 chicks around 5 months ago not knowing there gender and it turned out to be 3 boys and a girl. My Hen has been laying eggs since March 10th and hasn’t missed a day. I've decided to build my own incubator and hatch my own chicks. 15 eggs have been in the incubator for 4 days and today I though I would candle one. I noticed the egg was porous (not as porous as the example from "Candling Pics" forum on this site ). Will this egg still be good for hatching or should I get rid of it? I actually think most of her eggs look like this. What causes this? How to fix it? I have been checking her eggs for a month now to see if they are fertilized and almost everyone looks to be, there is a white dot with a ring around it. This means fertilized right?

My Homemade incubator seems to work fine. The temp stays between 37.4c - 37.9c. I have 2 small computer fans running inside the incubator and a tray with water. I also have a Digital Hygrometer/Thermometer and a Mercury Thermometer. I’m using a digital Thermostat with a 60w bulb for temperature control. If there is anything I should change please let me know.

I just left 10 posts so I can upload pics now

hi you could upload pics from other sites like imageshack.us tinypic.com and many other then copy the forum code it gives u after it uploads and paste here on your post
because a pic would help alot altho at day 4 sometimes we dont see much of developing

i had 2 hens that were sex with the roo every day so i colected 4 eggs from her and even tho she sex with my roo the eggs were porous and were not fertile , after i found that at day 9 when i candle i decided to eat those hens i dint like them anyways they were cute but out of my breed i wanted to have..

they were yummy in my dinner plate.

Based on multiple posts I've seen here, porous eggs can hatch just fine.

I would leave it in the incubator. Make sure you are offering your hen enough calcium to prevent this in the future.

Mine hatch. They also have ouster shells free choice... I get them often, so... Hen machinery is off in a few of my girls...

looks like its got the tiny lil blood dot in the center so mostlikely its fertile try to candle on day 10 see what it gives us... where are u located?

I actually feed her calcium tablets 2 times a week. I cook rice and crush up 4 tablets and mix it in with the rice. Should I feed her calcium more than I do. I feed her small fresh water shrimp, small fish, cooked rice, some greens we have left over, normal chicken food, rice in the husk, watermelon, snails, and bamboo shots crushed up. I mix animal multi vitamins in there water 1 time a week. I also give them dried egg shells for more calcium. Anything else you recommend?

I would be happy to settle for porous eggs...or any eggs for that matter. My first batch....all boys....second batch....boys....third batch....getting rooeyer everyday.
