Portable electric fence and hawks..

I put deer netting over the electric fenced area last year and I found it very fussy to do, it tangled, I couldn't really easily move the fence. So this year I decided to chance it and accept whatever losses I will incur with just the electric fence, to be repositioned every few weeks I will have three nets connected together for a large area in the woods for them to roam. After the underbrush starts growing out I think the chickens will probably have enough cover to hide from hawks. They'll just need to learn not to eat the fern, as I think it's not good for them. They already learned that the fence bites, so I hope they'll learn to leave it alone and go scratching a foot away from the fence.

My sister has a lab who's been great with the chickens - she was exposed to them from the time they arrived in the mail as chicks. Unfortunately she wasn't able to save one hen from a hawk - they've been free ranging during the day for the last 6 months or so and finally had their first loss recently (well, it seemed a hawk was the guilty party). I was surprised they all made it that long - there are lots of predators around! Lots of cover, but I think when it happens it happens fast.

Of course, we let them free with supervision but I've heard of foxes taking hens 20 feet away from their owners. Sigh.
