I'm ordering turkeys from Porter's this year. I know each turkey is different, how do find the temperaments in general?

For those that have different varieties, are they significantly different in temperament?

The ones that I have gotten from Porter's have all been good but I don't imprint poults so they grow up knowing that people aren't weird looking turkeys.

My Sweetgrass have been the mellowest turkeys of all the varieties that I have had.

Most of my varieties are from porters and have no problems with temperaments. You can always get a few that are just more aggressive that goes with all animals. But mostly temperament/aggressiveness I feel has to do with how they are raised. I do agree with @R2elk that my sweetgrass are very mellow and mine get a little larger than my other varieties. @Baybrio What varieties are you looking at?

I just asked about temperament because the focus of the website and I believe his breeding focus is color. (and I'm sure health and breeding ability) I know his birds are very highly thought of, and have no doubt I'll get fantastic very high quality birds.

I've been told Royal Palms might be a bit more nervous so I wanted to avoid turkeys with that temperament. I like calm animals. I've only had Narragansett in the past and love their temperament.

Of course each bird is unique. I do raise them with a lot of human contact. A few of each group are VERY people oriented, follow me around, some ride on the ATV when I go to fix fence. :D

The others are calm, just not interested in people.

I agree, a lot has to do with how they are raised. I work calmly and make sure people that come in contact with my birds (including children) do the same. I've had birds for many years and have only had one that was aggressive - a speckled Sussex rooster of all things.

I would not classify Royal Palms as more nervous. I do classify them as more flighty as in because of their smaller size they tend to take to flight more so than other varieties. My Royal Palms were no more nervous than any of the other varieties that I have had.

I'm looking at the recessive blue Narragansett and the chocolate. With black winged bronze as the alternative.

I'm also listing the assorted crosses as alternatives.
I have not raised Recessive Blue Narragansett or chocolate so can't reply on them specifically. But do have Porters Black winged bronze and have had no trouble with them. Mine do seem to get slightly larger breasts as do my bronze than some of my other varieties. I do raise more Sweetgrass each year now for a few reasons,1. very nice temperament and beautiful bird 2. they get a little larger faster than most my other varieties 3. they have less dark pigmented feathers and makes for cleaner looking bird when processed, black feathered birds like my black winged bronze and bronze can have a less appealing appearance after processing due to black pigmentation from pin feathers staining skin. Nothing wrong or harmful about staining just less appealing look for some people after processing. I am raising 9 different varieties right now but have raised others in the past. What are you wanting the birds for? Raising for meat/eggs, pets or both? If you like the looks of the sweetgrass they are one of my most preferred varieties in my opinion I have raised.
