Portsmouth, VA Chicken Laws?

If I wanted chickens I'd get chickens. But then I don't play well with others. I'm a master at minding my own business, and rather intolerant of those who cannot mind their own. In my opinion, most of these so-called regulations stem from a bunch of panty-waisted ego-ticians, who, in an effort to appear bigger than they are, come up with ridiculous rules and regulations to impose on others.

I totally agree chickortreat and i did and have had them for years But some one told the city and they paid me a visit yesterday. Now i am ready to fight but no idea where to start.

I called the Board of Health and got all the rules from them. I just had to send them a picture of the coop, drawing of my yard and where I was going to put it. I had to get my neighbors to sign something, only the ones that touch my property. I live in a row house so it was just the two on either side. That was the part that was worrying me. Both neighbors were great basically saying whatever you do in your own backyard is your business. I have a koi pond and lots of gardens, it is fenced. I was surprised that they allowed chickens at all, but glad they did. My neighbors know I keep my yard nice and clean up after my three dogs. Good luck to everyone that is trying to get them. They are worth the fight. Jackie

Sajack - what part of the city do you live in? What did the city say? How many chickens do you have? Any roosters? I am in Churchland and have 6 chicks - they are getting ready to go outside soon. My neighbor has raised quail for 20 years and has had no problems. Know another person that has had chickens for years with no issues (he lives in Churchland as well).

i have a neighbor who "gifted" me with 3 chicks. She kept 3 and I have three. She lives 4 houses away. She said, "we are allowed 4 hens, no ROOSTERS, have to be 25 feet from an occupied dwelling" hope this helps

I would like to assist with changing the city ordinance banning backyard chickens in Portsmouth. I'm not sure where to begin, but I know that there can be power in numbers. I'm ready to help.

Thank you ptownhomestead. Lets get together and see what we can do. Do you have friends that feel the same way?

I have heard this same rule. We have tried to find the Portsmouth code, but all we can find is about nuisance animals.
