Hi All,
A couple of weeks ago we went to local nursery who get their birds from a hatchery. I purchased what was sold as 2 Plymouth Barred Rocks and 2 Asian Black chicks. All 4 were sold as sexed pullets. The 2 PBR seem to be as advertised however the 2 Asian Blacks look fairly different from each other. One has slate legs and is much larger. The other has black legs and seems to have a 5th toe. Can anyone help with what she could be?? The pics are not fantastic so apologies, i will try to get more/better if needed.

I will try to get a better pic of her feet. It looks like she has 2 back toes both pointing down. I guess it could be a mutation. I am not familiar with 5 toe breeds so i didn't realize it points upward

You're right, there is a fifth toe.

I'm not sure what that means here. There are very few five toes breeds and she matches none of them.

Asian blacks, being hybrids, might have one of those breeds in their make up, though, and maybe it's just that her particular parents caused her to express a hidden gene. Or maybe a Silkie got into the Asian black pen somewhere, and this is the result.

I think things will be clearer when she has grown a bit more.

Thanks, I will keep watch to see how she changes as she gets older. I know the term "breed" is generous with the Asian Black and don't know what actual breeds were used to make up the hybrid. It just struck me as very odd how different they look from each other (leg color, beak color, size, and the toes)...so i figured I would reach out to BYC community and see what others with more experience thought.
