i have a new australorp I got from a friend who developed a limp after being here for about two days. We’ve had her a little over a week now and she’s still limping and I’m concerned as we have had flooding rain for days last week and even though the chickens have plenty of dry area between their coop and our front porch she was still out foraging in it. So of course I’ve checked her foot for bumble foot. It’s just a little more swollen than the other foot in the center of her foot and a little in her ankle but there is no obvious abscess or black scab spot for me to drain to start soaking her and packing the wound. She doesn’t limp hardly any when she walks just only when she runs. There’s also not an obvious temperature difference in the feet. The affected one is not blazing hot with infection. So I’m not really sure if it was an injury maybe in her being transported to us or caught by her previous owner or what it is. But I almost want to give antibiotics to prevent it from getting to the point of scabbing to be drained. Does anyone have any suggestions or what else it might be or if I need to start treating for bumble foot now?

Feel her entire leg for any fractures or swelling. If there isn't any I would give her some antibiotics and possibly separate her in a small area so she doesn't have to walk too much.

Okay that sounds about like what I’m doing now. I couldn’t find any fractures or anything that’s obviously out of place or deformed. The weird thing was she was in a small pen when I was adjusted her to the flock so I’m wondering if she was already hurt when she came here. Because I didn’t notice it in the small pen because she was only walking not running. She gets around fine and I only really notice it when she’s running. What antibiotics would you suggest? I know injectible penicillin is the thing for sure bumble foot but I don’t know what I could just start off with since I’m not sure that’s what it is

I would give her a few days of limited activity to see if that helps since you notice some swelling. If you've only had her for a couple of days, she was transported and introduced to your flock, she likely injured it during that time.

You can soak the feet/legs in warm epsom salts eveyrday to help with swelling and inflammation.

Unless you see obvious symptoms of infection, then I would also wait on treating with antibiotics.

Thank you! That’s what I’m doing with her now. I’m going to leave her confined and soak her legs. I was just so worried with the excessive rain we’ve had. Even though they had plenty of dry areas to get our yard was like a mote. So I was constantly worried about their feet especially hers. I’ll post a picture so maybe you or someone else can see something I’m maybe not

Actually, you might want to wait a bit on the antibiotics. She might've just sprained it or there might be a micro fracture in her foot. I would give her about a week in a smaller area without any other birds who could bully get and see if it goes away on its own.

I’ve posted pictures of both feet I just can’t see an obvious issue but I’ve soaked her feet put her in a clean small coop away from the others to see if she heals. I’m starting to wonder if this could’ve been an issue like splayed leg as a hatchling and it’s normal for her she doesn’t pull it away when I press on the affected one. But maybe you can see something in the pictures I’m not seeing I’m starting to question myself if it was even really more swollen like I thought lol

I don't see anything obvious or alarming. She may have just tweaked it a bit. I'd be inclined to give it some time to see if it resolves on it's own. If she seems bothered by it then daily soaks may help with the pain and swelling.

Thank you all you’ve relieved my worries I was so worried she’d end up having bumble foot with all the recent severely wet weather. She’s just such a sweet girl very friendly even after only being here a week or so. I’d hate for something to happen to her

Thank you for the photos.

I don't really see anything concerning. I would give her a soaking for a few days and limited activity to see if that helps, then go from there.

I do understand your worry about the wet ground, so you are doing the right thing by providing dry areas.
