Possible cedar plank shelving in coop?

So, I know you're not supossed to use cedar shavings for bedding in a chicken coop.

I've been converting an old (10 years+) workshop into my coop. My boyfriend just mentioned today that he thinks part of the shelving in the new coop may be cedar, based on smell. Will this still be a problem? It's not nearly as strong as fresh shavings would be, but there is a faint woodsy aroma. What does it look like if chickens are having a reaction to cedar? Chicks are currently still in the brooder. Do I need to start from scratch with a new coop?

I'm not certain about the cedar issues, but I was wondering if you could possible just remove the shelving?

I've never looked into why cedar is bad..your post has caused me to look. I just found this and haven't made it past the second post yet. You may want to read it to so I'm sharing it with you.

Thank you. It looks like properly dried cedar planking usually isn't usually a problem.

I'm not certain about the cedar issues, but I was wondering if you could possible just remove the shelving?

The shelving is built into the structure, but if I wanted to be doubly sure, it sounds like I could seal it off with paint or sealant.

We used some cedar dividers for the nesting box. We plan to paint but have not done so yet. They were dry boards.

Yes it can be painted or sealed.
