Possible gape worm in duck?

Hi Ravynscroft,

I just read up on your post and it certainly sounds like what is showing up in my geese. Two of them are gaping this morning and head shaking. We literally have tons of earthworms here. I can move a rock that's been sitting on the ground for a day and there they are. The chickens and geese love them, not so sure I do!
I am going to treat with the safeguard but have to do it in water vs individually at least for today. I want to get it started. I pulled my back rushing to get ready for the freeze last night. It'll be fine but not quite up to catching and battling the syringe vs 4 spoiled geese this evening.

I did dose with Eprinex pour on recently enough and do not think it got the issue taken care of as far as possible gapes. I did use a swab, and as you said, it's possible nothing showed up.

Hopefully I can move better tomorrow and dose them each. I read an article somewhere on here that 2.25ml to a gallon is enough? Would that be correct for geese also?

Thank you!!!

Eprinex/Ivermectin pour ons are only effective for external parasites (lice, mites) in my experience... I had been using pour on regularly when I discovered gapes in my flock...

*I believe* individual dosing of Safeguard is the same for geese, since it is done by weight, but I would check with @casportpony first... I don't recommend dosing in water as Safeguard really IS NOT water soluble... it settles to the bottom of the waterer quickly... but even so, 2.25mL/cc per gallon is not enough, IMO... again, I would ask Kathy for more info on that...

And in my opinion, underdosing is much more dangerous for the birds...

Edited as I hit post before I was done typing, lol...
