We lost one of our six 14-week old hens today. We have a mixed flock and the one who passed was our black sex link. I am really curious as to how it might have happened because it was completely out of the blue. We regularly go inside the run and hold the hens. Three of the six are more reserved and shy, so sometimes I try to prioritize holding them to get them used to people. Well today I picked up one of our shy girls and she scuffled out of my grip and “flew” down from waist height. Immediately upon landing she fell onto her side and convulsed for about 30-45 seconds, her eyes would roll back and forth a few times and her mouth was open. Within 60 seconds she was gone. Does this sound like a heart attack, and can than happen with a seemingly otherwise healthy backyard hen? If not what else could have happened?
