First time user. Hope I can get some feedback. We have a bantam cochin about 1 year old. I dont know much about chickens. ours has been staying in her cage about 24 hours. not moving much. her feathers on her underbelly are completely gone. is this something normal...moulting?? please help.

Does she puff up and maybe growl when you get close or try to remove her?

If so, you have a broody. She is wanting to set on some eggs. Almost every broody I have has a naked belly. This is normal, especially for cochins.

Get some poultry electrolytes, separate her from other chickens, feed her a mash of yogurt/chicken feed/cantalope, and watch her. Feather loss might not be anything...but check her over really good.

IT could be anything thing really...but we need a little more info.

Is she laying, eating, drinking?

Hope all will be better soon...

:)thanks for the reply! I called the local farm supply and spoke with someone who is a chicken friend. She too suggested our girl could be a broody. she does puff up and make a squeaky growl when i get close. I got an egg out of the fridge and ran it under some warm water. We placed the egg near her and sure enough she tucked it right under her belly and cozied up on top of it. I will continue to keep a watchful eye on our girl in the meantime....just in case. I really appreciate your help and I am so glad I found this web site! Our "little Pecker" will deffinately benefit from it as well!

P.S our 6 yr old daughter named the chicken...........
