Possible Infectious Bronchitis

I would go with injectable if I could get my hands on it. That way you make sure that each bird is getting exactly the right amount of antibiotics.

IB is a virus and antibiotics have no effect against the virus. Antibiotics would be used for secondary bacterial infection. If your hens are laying eggs; watch for wrinkled eggs and watery whites...telltale signs of IB.

Hi Christie, I didnt read your other thread, but if you prefer not to cull, the best thing IMHO is Tylan injectable. I had a problen in the spring, and it is the only thing that worked. I also read up on Oxine, and felt that helped too! Good luck! It seems you have already gotten information, but figured I would chime in since I went through a respiratory thing as well!

I went today to Tractor Supply and purchased Tylan 50 and gave my dozen chickens their first of the three injections (although i have seen other threads that recommend to treat for 5 days). What is your opinion in the number of treatment days. I got my information form the Ultimatefowl website. S imkinda trust them more.

So how much Tylan did you give them and for how many days?

Hi Christie, how old are they, and how big? I was told it is 1/2 ml or cc for a full size standard, or 1/4 ml for a bantam adult. If chickens of either size were younger or smaller, you would cut the dose in half. You are supposed to treat for 3-5 days depending on severity. So, since you are having a rough bout, I would do the 5 days.

That's a good suggestion to do the five days. When should I expect to see them acting normally again? They are out of the coop and free ranging (some) but seem to be mostly resting and lethargic, although today it's raining. I saw on another thread somewhere that if I didn't see improvement in three to four days upon completion of the initial treatment to repeat. What is your opinion?

I think they should be feeling perkier within 2-3 days. Hope this helps them! I would hope that they shouldnt be still sick at the end of the 5 days, if they are, I would almost re-evaluate treatment.

I had them on Oxytetracycline for a week and saw NO improvement at all. All the while I was on this website reading threads and trying to figure out what was wrong with them. So I have pretty much self- diagnosed based on what I have read and thoughts that other people have had. This is my first go ' round with chickens. I originally had a flock of eight and got four more from the same guy. They were sick and I didn't know it. I didn't know I was supposed to quarantine them. I'm new to all this. Everything was going so well. I couldn't keep up with the egg orders. I just wanted to get a even dozen so I would get a dozen eggs a day. Live and learn. I'm getting two eggs a day, and I'm discarding them.

Aww, yeah, the problems that chickwns can get are so frustrating!! I hope this works for you!! I have a feeling the Tylan will work, especially if you do the 5 days.
