I have never dealt with any parasites since owning my chickens. None of my chickens have had any problems walking or eating or such. I just happened to notice one of the legs of my black hens and it looks swollen and whitish in color. It also seems a little scaley. I was wondering if this is possibly leg mites? I read to use Vaseline to kill the mites. They are in a dirt pen to get to their roost and free range mostly all day every day. Do I need to treat the pen? If so what would I use?? Thank you for your help.

yup it LOOKS ike leg mites... go to the learning centerr or look up other threads because they give a lot of good info for how to treat

I've seen worse but that's a nasty case of scaly leg mites. There's a product called Nu-Stock http://www.nustock.com/ . It is a mange mite ointment that works well. Apply it a couple times within a week. Then apply Sulfur Salve http://www.poultrysupplies.com/index_files/Page398.htm every day for a week and it should clear up. It is best to apply ointment from where the fluff stops at the top of the leg, down to the toes. Wear some surgical gloves and massage it into the scales. Do it at night when they roost so it absorbs and a bunch of dirt doesn't stick to their legs and feet. Don't forget to treat the roosts. Ravap is a good premise/roost treatment. So is Permectrin II.
