I've had my chickens for about 3 years and am a first time chicken owner. I recently purchased 4 birds (2 cream legbars, 22 weeks and 2 welsummer 8 weeks) from a local person (I hate to call them a breeder since I don't know the certs for that). I looked over the birds and they looked healthy and fine. I added (I know....I know) the 2 legbars to my flock that evening and kept the 2 younger ones that still needed heat separate. 2-3 weeks later I had something respiratory start going thru my flock. I'm pretty sure it's MG :( Some of the flock started sneezing, watery nasal discharge and raspy breathing. I quarantined and treated those that exhibited symptoms with Tylosin in a separate area. Once the raspy breathing subsided (I gave tylosin for 5 days) I added them back to the flock. I just treated the rooster last week, he showed with raspy/cackly breathing and bubbles in one eye. There is no poultry vet nearby. The problem I have is that I had one of the flock just hatch her first clutch (she was separated the whole time) and this is the first batch of babies on my property. I'm afraid to think of putting the babies in with the flock when it comes time....I don't really want to cull the whole flock, but how do I manage this mess I've gotten into? I was just starting to sell the eggs and see some promise there. I have a dozen hens and am only getting 4-5 eggs a day, which typically seems extremely low to me since I was getting 8-10 before they got sick. Does egg production go back up after they've been treated? Anyone have any tips for me?

Sorry that your new chickens could have been carriers of a respiratory disease. It could be MG from the foamy eye and other symptoms. Infectious bronchitis is common too, and there can be more than one type of disease at the same time. The incubation time is about right from a few days to 2 weeks after exposure or stress bringing about symptoms. Tylosin for 5 days (1 tsp per gallon of water) is the easiest thing to use against MG, while IB virus will run its course over a month or so. Since you flock has already been exposed, your flock will be carriers. It would be hard to keep the chicks free from exposure but you could try to vaccinate them for MG before adding them to the flock. Here is some reading about MG:
