Possible Quail Pattern Silkie... *UPDATE** Options Wanted.

THANKS!

That was my feeling about it. Seeing as self blue is still a new-ish color in silkies and add in the 'whatever' factor... it must be possible to occasionally get some strange results. Even if it 'should only be one way'. We have had a few weird ones that everyone has said were impossible.

I personally am not a fan! I like the ordered 'idea' of genetics and that you should get predictable results if you know what you are working with. Sigh.

I appreciate everyones input!

just looks like a lot of "grey" silkies I have seen over the years.
I on the other hand ,am more of the d'anver pro, have silkies but focus mainly on my 21 colors of d'anvers
quail at hatch will be jet black with a tan face, silver quail will be black with a white face, sort of similar to the chick pic but black, not grey, so I can see where the thought of a silver quail pattern may have come from. I know silkie colors vary a lot from "normal" chickens, but after seeing it grown up, I in not way could call is quail based, especially based off the colors of it's parents.

Hey BBB

We did hatch a 'grey' out of that same batch. The pattern grey... not the color.

They were alike in the fact that they were different!

This is almost the creamy opposite of grey.

The color is quite beautiful I think... not buff... not silver... not grey.

Thats cool, yep, I use to have the true greys, they didnt hatch the color of the chick you posted either, so Lord only knows.

Yes, reguardless, it is a very pretty color to me!!

Hi Ya'll

Still trying to figure out what color this beautiful fella' is. I think we will have to make something up!

We may have one more chick... waiting to see as it grows out.

This guy is just the SWEETEST thing ever and BEAUTIFUL. Not sure that we are going to be able to keep him due to space concerns.

I would love to breed him back to some of our lavender girls to see what we would get.

The pictures don't really tell his color... I will try again on a sunnier day. He is a really neat straw color with a grey base. He has some black/dark grey tail feathers and streaking throughout. What is really cool are the RED feathers that are just starting to come in in his wings. There are only a few but wow... pretty!

Here is an OK picture of him today... like I said ill try again in the sun! Im also posting a picture of his mother... father and a half brother for comparison.

Let me know what you guys think!

Darling Farms~

Indeed to can become "Quail" patterned Silkies you need to start from "grey" Silkies (these have not the pattern gene "Pg") :

"Quail" patterned chickens need also the melanisation gene "Ml" which is present in (what I call) "BlackSilvers" :

Knowing the genetic background and the working of the needed color-genes and their combinations (= genotype) a project can be started for building a phenotype => "Quail-pattern".

The one day old "Quail" chicks look completely different from "Partridge" chicks (because of different color-gene-pool)
This is a "Quail" one day old female Silkie chick :

This how she is now at age of 4 months old :

Her male counterpart look as this at 8 months of age :

During the selections where several inbetween stages :

Growing out as these (from darker to lighter) :

To become as these on 3 months old :

Later on at 7 months old as these :

Earlier selection still had the "Partridge" pattern (incomplete) as one day old chicks :

Which grow out as this male "Partridge/Columbian" like Silkie :

The female counterparts looking as this "Partridge/Columbian" :

One of the detail selections I always made was the "black head/beard" :

and Black feetfeathers :
