I had one of my ducks laying on a clutch of eggs, and they were about ready to start hatching. Yesterday one started to hatch. When I went to check on the ducks, the duckling had hatched but was about two feet away from the nest and slightly bleeding from it’s head/neck area. I rushed the chick home and put it in the incubator and fairly soon, it was a lot better. The bleeding had stopped and the duckling dried completely. It’s been doing good so far, but I’ve noticed now that both of its eyes are shut now and it sounds like it has a respiratory problem, kinda like a clicking sound when it breathes. Right now it just wants to cuddle and sleep. I’ve tried getting it to eat and drink but it’s not interested. Any ideas what could be happening?

The mom or, if they're in a pen with others, another duck may have attacked the little guy. If it was in the head/neck area, they could have damaged something, or blood could have gotten in the ducklings nose. To encourage eating and drinking, mix either a bit of sugar or electrolytes with water and draw it into a syringe or baby dropper. Then squeeze a bit onto the tip of the ducklings bill. Once it starts opening its mouth you can start very slowly squeezing it directly in. Make sure you do not drown the duckling when you do this! Hopefully this should help.

Thank you, I will give that a try!
