Hello,
I am still pretty new to chickens, so I'd like a second opinion on one of my girls. I am thinking she may have worms, but I have also read that there are good/bad bacteria for a chicken's gut, and I am wonder if she has some sort of issue there?
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) Barred Rock pullet, roughly 7 months old. She is smaller than my other barred rock of the same age and hasn't seemed to grow much in the past two or so months.
2) What is the behavior, exactly. She is smaller than my other BR, hasn't seemed to grow (but isn't wasting away) and isn't laying yet, though my other BR has been laying consistently for over a month. Also, every time I see her poop, it is VERY runny and a brownish/green color. I know some runny poops are normal, but I can't remember the last time I saw her poop with some mass to it. She has good energy levels and eats and drinks normally. That is mostly why I haven't worried about her before.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? I am not completely sure, but probably a month or two?
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No, I have two other birds (the other BR and an australorp). Both of them lay regularly and are a normal size and have normal poops. If worms were the problem, wouldn't my other chickies be showing symptoms?
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. nope
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. can't think of anything, but like I said, I am new at this!
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. She eats and drinks regularly. I feed them purina sun fresh layer crumbles. They all free range for about an hour on weekdays and most of Saturday and Sunday. I also give a little bit of treat every other day, usually black oil sunflower seeds or stale bread.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. Very runny and dark brownish green...all the time!
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? Nothing so far
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? Seems like I should be able to treat myself.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. Not right now
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use Coffee chaff in the coop, fenced in run that we move over fresh grass once a week, free ranging in our grassy/weedy (haha!) backyard
