I didn't post this correctly the first time but thought I'd try it again. I have a 1 yr old Rhode Island Red that might be egg bound but I don't know the symptoms or what to do to fing out for sure. I away over the weekend but got back to find her tail drooping way down and she'll "full and heavy" butt but it's not hard. It feels more like it's spongy or full of liquid. I gloved and lubed up and inserted a finger as far as I could and found nothing. What should I do or what else could it be if not a broken egg or egg bound?

I have no idea what since you checked her out. Is she eating? Getting around good or sluggish? Maybe someone with more experience will see this and give you some clues as to what can be done. I hope she gets better soon.

She's sluggish but walking around like she's got a load in her pants. If I knew what the symptoms were for an egg bound hen or a constipated hen I might be able to compare with what she's doing. Her entire butt area is so large now. I don't know whether to let her die by explosion or put her out of her misery. I just don't know what to do for her. She sitting under the coop now with a couple other hens.

I once had a chicken die because the breeder told me that it was egg bound. When I asked what I could have done, I was told that I could have taken the chicken and put her lower half in warm water (sort of like sitz bath) to help get the egg out. Never had a chance to try it but who knows...it might work. Please let us know what happens to your hen.

Thanks! I do it right away. Her lower half is so huge now I keep imagining finding her in the morning with her guts split open and everywhere cause it split and spilled while she's still alive and she screams and runs and the other chickens see the blood and they go after her....what a daymare! I had just moved her to a cage by herself but I'll go get her and start her soaking!
