Hi everyone, I have a hen I think may be egg bound. I’ve never had this happen before! She was lethargic and puffed up with her tail down last night, and her comb was folded over and pale. She’s a 4 year old red sex link and has always laid great big eggs. Her vent is clean and she will eat and drink since separating her but has just been standing still. I don’t feel an egg anywhere in her pelvis but can feel something hard and possible round way up under her left thigh towards her belly. It was also 0 here last night and cold the last few days (NY). All of my other hens and roosters are fine, and their coop is well built and dry. Thoughts? Thank you!! There should be 2 pictures below assuming I attached them correctly.

Insert a finger into her vent 1-2 inches to see if you can feel a stuck egg. When did she lay her last egg? Hens her age can develop reproductive problems beside egg binding. Does she eat layer feed and have access to crushed oyster shell for calcium? If she is very weak, and you feel an egg, I would skip the bath and place her on a moist thick towel placed on a heating pad on LOW for some time to see if she lays anything. Giving a dose of Tums or calcium tablet can help muscle contractions pass a stuck egg. Here is a good article to read on egg binding:

Thank you! She laid her last egg 5 days ago. They eat layer feed and oyster shells, ground egg shells, etc. Their shells are incredibly strong and have always looked great, my coworkers always laugh about how much harder it is to crack one of my eggs than it is to crack one from the store. They have been in their coop most of the week because of the bad weather here. I have 16 hens and several nesting boxes but they always use the same one. I'm wondering if she couldn't get in the box and ended up holding the egg back and that being what caused the problem. I had 4, 4 year old sex-link hens and they have always laid gigantic eggs regularly, even through winter. Some of them have been scarily large. Last year I had one prolapse too bad to save her, and had a feeling with their age I would have another issue with them in the near future. I checked on her this morning before I left for work and she is the same as yesterday, still eating and drinking a bit, and she has let out a couple runny poops. I checked her out and I think I can feel an egg closer to her vent now, and her vent was protruded a little bit (not prolapsed), which it wasn't yesterday. I am going to grab supplies on my way home and try to get that thing out today. Thank you very much for your response!

I have her on a heating pad and got her to eat a piece of a tum. I’m honestly not sure if I feel an egg or not it’s hard to tell and I’m not sure what I’m feeling for I think I’ve been thinking her pelvis is an egg. She’s still in the same condition, should I try the bath? I stuck my finger a couple inches in her vent and didn’t feel anything. She’s pooping white, clear and green, small amounts at a time

Another update: I inspected her more this morning and made a shocking discovery I can’t believe I missed (actually I can because her feathers are abundant and beautiful and she’s a great actress), she’s a skeleton. She barely has any breast muscle. I have 3 red sex links and 1 stopped laying a few months ago - I assumed it was season related- and I also thought it was one of the others but I believe now it was this girl.
So she’s been inside for 3 days, noticeably sick for 5, she’s incredibly underweight, pooping clear liquid and dark green/brown loose stool, small amounts at a time. She’s lethargic, doesn’t move at all just stands or lays in the same place, has a pale comb that’s flopped over, and is eating and drinking very very small amounts.
I think she may have coccidiosis. I’ve rule out egg bound and sour crop. Otherwise it’d have to be cancer or something? Her eyes are clear she’s just super sleepy.
I started her on 9.6% Corid, I did .28ml with a dropper directly into her mouth, since she isn’t drinking much, if at all. I hope I’m not too late. I’ve only had chickens for a few years and have had a good amount of sick chicken experiences, but never coccidiosis. Is there something else I should be doing for her? Thank you in advance!
